Phil Urges Industry to Adapt to Insurance and Economic Shifts

Philip Rosebrook, president of Business Mentors, outlined key challenges facing restoration companies and offered actionable solutions to navigate the evolving landscape. Rosebrook pointed to rising insurance premiums, inflation, and a tightening insurance market as driving forces reshaping the sector.

“We’re seeing major changes in how insurance companies handle claims,” Rosebrook said, citing instances of homeowner premiums rising from $3,000 to $20,000 in a year. “As deductibles increase, many clients are moving away from filing small claims, pushing restoration companies to adapt by offering upfront pricing and collecting larger deposits.”

He emphasized the need for businesses to develop robust strategic plans that look beyond day-to-day operations. “You can’t run your business the way you did 10 years ago,” he warned, advocating for a disciplined approach to cash flow and capital management. Rosebrook recommended using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to break down long-term goals into manageable quarterly plans.

Technology and outsourcing also play a crucial role in increasing efficiency, he noted. “Tools like MagicPlan and DocuSketch can help you scale operations without adding more staff,” Rosebrook said. He also encouraged companies to consider outsourcing non-core tasks to services like Karma Staff or Epic Estimating to reduce overhead.

Leadership, according to Rosebrook, remains the single most important factor in business success. “The number one determining factor of success is strong leadership,” he asserted. “Invest in your people, create a culture of accountability, and develop leaders from within.”

Rather than fear the shifting market, Rosebrook sees it as an opportunity for restoration businesses to thrive through proactive adaptation. “In challenging times, great leaders emerge. By embracing technology, refining your processes, and staying disciplined in your operations, you can not only weather the storm but come out stronger on the other side.”

Scott Miller Emphasizes Discipline as the Key to Restoration Success

Scott Miller, founder of The Growth League and a seasoned business coach, shared his insights on how discipline and strategic leadership can help restoration companies thrive, even in challenging economic times. Drawing from over 15 years of experience, Miller emphasized the importance of disciplined focus and accountability in driving business success.

“Discipline is about staying focused, even when things get tough,” Miller said. “It’s easy to lead when times are good, but the real test of leadership is how you respond when the environment changes.”

Miller stressed the need for restoration business owners to implement a strong accountability system within their teams. “One of the most common issues I hear from business owners is that their teams aren’t following through,” Miller explained. “This often comes down to not setting clear expectations. A simple document outlining two to five key metrics can transform accountability and help everyone understand whether they’re on track or not.”

He encouraged business leaders to delegate more effectively, reminding them that a leader’s job is to focus on big-picture strategies rather than getting caught up in day-to-day tasks. “Many owners feel like they’re the only ones who can handle certain responsibilities, but that mindset can limit growth,” Miller said. “By delegating, you not only free up time for leadership tasks but also empower your team to take ownership.”

Miller also highlighted the importance of setting measurable goals and regularly reviewing performance, both for individual employees and the company as a whole. “I often say, if you’re not measuring it, you’re not managing it,” he said. “Establish clear goals, track them weekly, and make adjustments where necessary. Discipline in this area is what separates successful businesses from those that struggle.”

Closing his presentation, Miller offered practical advice for businesses to maintain focus and consistency. “If you want to see real progress, pick one area to improve and get disciplined about it,” he said. “Whether it’s better financial management, improving accountability, or refining your sales process, start now and stick with it.”

Miller sees these disciplined practices as the foundation for long-term success. “In a shifting market, staying disciplined in your goals and processes will give you the edge. The businesses that maintain focus and build accountability will not only survive but thrive.”
